enjoy some mountain music

if you have a chance go see the great high mountain tour in your town, i highly recommend it.

particularly poignant was the nashville bluegrass band's rendition of the song "lucky" which i couldn't tell if they wrote it or not. it was about a WWII vet coming home from war and declared that he was the luckiest man alive. then his son goes and comes home and he declares he's the luckiest man alive.

...and today is memorial day.

business schools and blogging

when are business schools going to get it? this is the new wave. i think they are a little leery after chasing the dot com bubble that burst in their faces.

but if bill gates is sniffing around doesn't that signal co-optation?

who is buckingham palace?

now, i'm curious? who is "buckingham palace?" my only guess is that it has to be the service of my most famous and notorious neighbor who lives four houses down -- f. lee bailey. for those of who don't know, f. lee has had some serious defendants, patty hearst, oj, the boston strangler, and some mob bosses.

the guy's not too friendly but he sure knows how to handle a snow blower. he cleared our whole driveway last year without saying a word. no "do you need some help?" or "you're welcome." just walked up, did the job, and left like some drifting outlaw. only in massachusetts.

|

buckingham palace, i love you!

i don't know who's wireless service but some service named "buckingham palace" is affording me the opportunity to blog at the beach!!

i'm new to the north shore so i don't know what beach i'm on but its just south of the red rock bistro in swampscott.

back to work...

courtney and me: the love continues

someday i'll chronicle my love for all things courtney but today another parallel was revealed: she and i are ordained as ministers from the same church in modesto, ca.

courtney married a bunch of people in lake tahoe as a radio promotion.

why more lesbians getting marriage licenses?

are we to believe the old stereotypes about lesbians making commitments faster and for longer than gay men? the data from yesterday shows lesbians getting licenses at a rate of 2 to 1.

well, the first lesbian joke i ever heard goes like this:

what do lesbians do on their second date?

rent a u-haul.

would this maybe speak to the assertion that lesbians have an easier time being "out" than gay men because male homosexuality is such an affront to hetero men, while two women together is highly sexualized.

U.S. still not a country that allows gay marriage

howard stern's newswoman robin quivers reported this morning that the U.S is now one of 4 countries that allow gay marriage. that's not entirely accurate. like canada, where gay marriage is only allowed in 3 provinces, gay marriage for now is only allowed in massachusetts. now this will create a ripple effect nationwide but to state the U.S. is now one of these elite 4 is overstating the effect as of now.

local coveragey

by the way, the other two countries are the netherlands and belgium.

gay marriage licenses issued in lynn, massachusetts

just got back from city hall. because lynn has a small but notably visible gay population, it wasn't as crazy as in cambridge or p-town. but it was alive with activity with about an equal amount of male and female couples getting married. i took my daughter with me to "watch" all the while trying to explain to her what she was witnessing.

one woman stopped and asked us what we were doing there. i told her i wanted my daughter to witness history and we wanted to show our support. the woman burst into tears and could only muster, "thank you, thank you."

us heteros take this privilege for granted so it was great today to see people feeling that same elation that i felt when i got married.

will report on more later.

dave weinberger reports from cambridge, ma at midnight

dave weinberger took his daughter to cambridge ma to witness the first gay marriage licenses to be issued in the state of mass.

|

gay marriage legal today

today's the day we make history...

boy when freddie mercury sang those words, i'm sure he could never have conceived what's happening today in massachusetts.

i'm taking my daughter to the lynn town hall to witness history.

clerks in cambridge, ma actually started sending them out last night at midnight.

i'll keep you posted during the day.

you're shmoopie, no you're shmoopie

i never liked seinfeld, yet, one episode had a major impact on my life. the "shmoopie" episode got my friends and i started on calling each other shmoopie as a joke. the line was between jerry and one of his girlfriends, "you're shmoopie" and the other one saying "no, you're shmoopie." i don't think the girlfriend was stacy travis, my friend from my high school in plano, tx. she was the meat girlfriend i think but don't quote me because i hated seinfeld.

well, the shmoopie thing kind of died out among my friends, as they were creative enough to come up with new nicknames, but i got stuck on it. i started calling my boyfriend shmoopie as a joke and he started doing it as a joke and as what happens with these things sometimes, it stuck. we started calling each other shmoopie (which has now been reduced to "shmoo") in private and then horrifyingly, in public. it always brought looks of disgust from our friends because a) it was obnoxious, and b) it was very out of character for our relationship.

this was 8 years ago (this week) that this relationship started. we are now married, call each other shmoo at least 5 times a day (more on weekends) and the best/worst part of it all is that our daughter now has a shmoopie-derived nickname. watch this game of telephone on haven's nickname.

baby shmoopie
bubby shmoopie
bubby shmoo
bubby shmuzz
shmuz or "the shmuz"

yes, our kid's nickname is "shmuz" borne from that seinfeld episode from 9 years ago.

and you wonder why people cried at the end of friends???

i was wondering what was up with my tivo tonight

i'm sitting in my kitchen watching survivor, while the tivo is tivo'ing friends. i can't watch both, i guess its because i have cable. so i keep going in at the commercials to make sure its still recording. but i noticed that friends was tivo'd from 8 to 8:59. why?

boing boing reported why this is:

not that this is anything new. i've been doing this all season...

howard stern: form an alliance with daytime dramas!

howard has been getting his listeners to complain to the fcc about oprah's teen sex episode. he's also been monitoring the soaps and telling people to complain about the stuff on there. i think this is the wrong move. soaps have long been the punching bag of the tv industry. but they have also led the way by introducing controversial topics way before the night networks would even touch it: AIDS, alcoholism, drug addiction, homosexuality, incest, and demonic possession. ok you get my drift.

so, instead of turning the hounds on the soaps, i think howard should court the soaps because they are basically saying the same thing: let us do our thing and if you don't want to watch -- turn it off.

what is a blog?

i've been getting that question alot since i sent out the notice that i've started blogging so i thought i'd link to a good website that explains it. thanks to our friends at google. my idea is to have one of the google tabs to be "blogs" so when you search on "john kerry" say, you can look at all the blogs that are related to him.

chronicle of higher ed article about academic blogging

found an article called "scholars who blog" in the chronicle of higher ed last year.

scholars who blog unite!

state of blogging at business schools

told someone high up (veep) at school today that i was going to blog graduation, and he thought i was going to stage a protest.

maybe that says less about how much people know about blogging and more about how people perceive me....

Hello, Mr. Weinberg

i thought i'd dedicate tonight to the only person reading my blog, mr. bruce weinberg. bruce was a blogger before there was a term for it. his one year long daily diary of his internet shopping experience was revolutionary. too bad he didn't have the proper software to make it a proper interactive blog.

we have started talking about what a bentley blogging community would look like. glenn reynolds said today in an email to me that there really isn't a formal webblogring (if that's even a term) for academics. he gave me a couple of places to look:

But try http://volokh.com and
http://www.danieldrezner.com/blog and you'll see lots of links to academic bloggers. I link 'em, too, but don't break 'em out.

he also mentioned bill hobbs, whose job it is to foster academic blogging at belmont university in nashville.

|

i'm taking back my blog...

my blog was temporarily hijacked by my kid's school for a fundraiser. it worked because the school raised over $35,000. with a matching grant that is a huge shot in the arm for this beleagured non-profit school and daycare center.

i'm starting to make connections with other bloggers, glenn reynolds and dave weinberger. i'm interested in connecting with the academic bloggers even though i haven't used mine yet for any academic purpose.

i know dave winer has been trying to get harvard to blog with limited success but i'm wondering if a school like bentley that is so already hard-wired for technology use would be more amenable to using them than a more "established" institution.

back to grading...
